Plan your visit
If you only open one planning page before a Namadgi trip, make it this one. The park protects 106,095 hectares — almost half the ACT — on Ngunnawal Country at the northern end of the Australian Alps. The front door is Namadgi Visitor Centre, Naas Road, Tharwa (about 45–60 minutes from Canberra CBD). A good trip is logistics plus restraint: one named outdoor block (Yankee Hat, Cypress Pine, Booroomba-from-Honeysuckle, Square Rock, or Gingera — not a stack), a checked road alert, water in the car, and free entry never mixed up with paid camping. This is the operator’s brief. Parks ACT is the live status.

Pick a day shape (before you leave Canberra)
Most failed visits are not “bad weather” — they are driving Booroomba Rocks Road while it is closed, stacking Gingera onto a Canberra afternoon, or skipping the Visitor Centre. Choose a shape that matches fitness, daylight and the live alert list, then open the matching itinerary. You can always do less on the ground; you cannot invent daylight on Boboyan Road.
Visitor Centre + one short walk
Tharwa first. Woodland Walk or Cypress Pine Lookout. Yankee Hat only if the unsealed road and a 3-hour walk still fit.
Half-day from Tharwa →
Square Rock granite day

Booroomba from Honeysuckle
Road closed on the current snapshot. Walking access is 10.5 km / 4 hours Grade 4 from Honeysuckle via the AAWT — not the old 2.5 km car-park day.

Gingera full day
Sleep in Canberra. First light at Corin Dam or Mt Franklin Road. Pryors Hut is the turnaround. Not a CBD afternoon.

How long do I need?
Drive time from Canberra CBD is typically about 45–60 minutes to Namadgi Visitor Centre at Tharwa. That is a capital day-trip for Woodland Walk, Cypress Pine or Yankee Hat if the road is kind — not for Mount Gingera. People who should not treat this as a CBD afternoon: anyone hoping to bag Gingera and still make dinner in Civic, anyone stacking Booroomba-from-Honeysuckle onto Square Rock, or anyone driving Booroomba Rocks Road without checking the live alert.
| Shape | On the ground | Honest calendar from Canberra | Who should not |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 hours | Visitor Centre + Woodland Walk or Cypress Pine Lookout | Fits a Canberra afternoon if you leave on time | Anyone adding Yankee Hat or granite “because we’re here” |
| Half day | Yankee Hat (6.5 km / 3 hours) including the unsealed drive | Leave the CBD with a clock; ask at Tharwa first | Summit baggers with a late start |
| Full day | Booroomba from Honeysuckle or Square Rock or Gingera — pick one | Gingera: overnight in Canberra, first-light start. Granite: a full walking day after the drive | Groups adding a second mountain “because we’re here” |
| Overnight / 3-day | Booked Orroral / Honeysuckle + one valley walk | The realistic trip for this park | Anyone still trying to “do the whole park” |
Deeper: Gingera is not a Canberra afternoon · Tharwa half-day plan · itineraries. House-to-house for a summit from the CBD is a 14–18 hour mission if you ignore the overnight — that is why this page treats a bed as part of the park plan, not an extra.
When to go
There is no single best month — only trade-offs between snow on the Brindabellas, heat in the valleys, fire risk, and unsealed-road closures. Gingera can freeze in any month. Tharwa is not ridge temperature.
- Summer: warmer valley walking, alpine wildflowers, snakes, bushfire risk. Yankee Hat and Orroral get weekend crowds.
- Autumn / spring: excellent walking windows if roads are dry. Shoulder ice still happens on granite.
- Winter: snow on higher ranges; chains or closures possible. Contact the Visitor Centre. Gingera is a winter skill day, not a first walk.
- Any month on the ridges: a “fine” Canberra CBD forecast is not a Brindabella forecast.
- After rain / fire recovery: unsealed roads (including Booroomba Rocks Road) can close at short notice. 80% of the park burnt in 2020 — recovery is visible. Read today’s Parks ACT notice.

Fees — three separate systems (never mix)
Official buttons first. We never affiliate park camping, day entry or permits. VERIFY live amounts on Parks ACT — this is not a price table.
A. Day vehicle / park entry
Parks ACT: admission to Namadgi National Park is free. No day vehicle pass. VERIFY live. Dogs are not permitted in the park (limited vehicle-transit exception on Boboyan / Brindabella Roads — VERIFY).
B. Camping
Vehicle camping only at Orroral, Honeysuckle and Mount Clear. Bookings essential. Fees per person per night (not per site). Typical max 7 consecutive nights. Mount Clear: remote, basic, unsealed, not for camper trailers. Phone 02 6237 5307 while online bookings are down. Never affiliate.
C. Walk permits
No general day-walk permit for marked tracks. Cotter catchment: pack camping prohibited in lower/middle; upper catchment by permit. Organised groups may need permits. VERIFY the Brief Guide.
Official: Parks ACT — Namadgi National Park · Fees and charges · Booroomba road Plan B →
Camping (official only)
Park entry is free. Camping is a separate paid, booked system — never mix the two. Vehicle camping inside the park is Orroral, Honeysuckle and Mount Clear only. Fees are per person per night (not per site). Typical maximum 7 consecutive nights. Snapshot: online campground bookings unavailable — phone Namadgi Visitor Centre 02 6237 5307 during hours. This site never sells park camping.
Parks ACT: take rubbish with you (bins are not provided). Bring your own drinking water. Bring your own firewood or buy it at the Visitor Centre — collection is illegal. Huts are day or emergency use; bring a tent if overnighting at hut sites. Fire bans apply. Fuel stove preferred.
Book official only
Parks ACT where-to-stay or the Visitor Centre phone. Never affiliate. Do not invent dollar amounts here — fees are reviewed annually.
Official where to stayWhich camp
Orroral — bush setting; caravans/trailers possible (official). Honeysuckle — groups; current Booroomba walking access. Mount Clear — remote, basic, unsealed, tents/swags preferred, not for camper trailers. Skip Mount Clear for a first overnight.
When the campground is full
Sleep in Canberra (or Queanbeyan overflow). Do not invent a paddock night or a Mount Clear van run on an unsealed road you have not checked. Woods Reserve was still listed closed until late Spring on re-check 26 Aug 2026 — not overflow.

First-day plan (what to do first)
If you only remember one filter: one named outdoor block after a Visitor Centre briefing (and a Canberra bed if the walk is granite or Gingera). The high-satisfaction first product is Tharwa plus Yankee Hat or Cypress Pine — not Gingera stacked onto a Civic afternoon.

- Night before: write the outdoor goal out loud (Woodland Walk / Cypress Pine / Yankee Hat / one granite day). Screenshot Parks ACT alerts on Canberra Wi-Fi. Fill fuel and water in Tuggeranong.
- Sleep in Canberra (or book Orroral/Honeysuckle official). Tharwa is last village, not a full-services town. Wrong start is driving Booroomba Rocks Road while the alert is live.
- Visitor Centre first: Naas Road, Tharwa — about 2.7 km south of the bridge. Official hours: 9am–4pm weekdays; 9am–4:30pm weekends and public holidays; closed Christmas Day. Card only. Ask about unsealed roads. PLB hire if you are stretching the day.
- Do the one thing: walk it. Eat. Reverse clock on granite or Gingera. Do not add a second mountain because the first felt easy.
- Do not invent: Gingera as an afternoon add-on, Booroomba from the closed road, Square Rock plus Gingera, or Gibraltar Falls as a 20-minute extra (lookout closed on the current snapshot).

Map — Tharwa door, Corin door, Boboyan south
Mental model: Visitor Centre at Tharwa; Orroral / Honeysuckle for camping and Booroomba access; Corin Road for Square Rock and Stockyard Spur; Boboyan Road south for Yankee Hat and Mount Clear. Canberra for beds; Tharwa for the last village; Corin Road for Square Rock and Gingera. Towns are where you eat, sleep and fill fuel. The park holds the tracks.

Getting there
Sealed to Tharwa and the Visitor Centre, and along Corin Road. Pick the door that matches the walk — do not bounce Tharwa and Corin in one day. Unsealed park roads (Booroomba Rocks Road, Old Boboyan Road, Orroral Ridge Road) are generally 2WD when dry — VERIFY with the Visitor Centre. Public transport does not drop you at Honeysuckle or Yankee Hat. Canberra is the hotel, fuel and medical hub.
Tharwa / Visitor Centre
Tuggeranong → Tharwa → Naas Road. About 45–60 minutes from Canberra CBD. First stop for maps, roads, PLB hire.
Orroral / Honeysuckle
South of the Visitor Centre. Current walking access to Booroomba while the road is closed. Campgrounds booked official only.
Corin Road
Square Rock and Stockyard Spur / Gingera. Different door to Tharwa — pick one approach per day. Gibraltar Falls lookout is closed on the current snapshot.
Boboyan south
Yankee Hat, Settlers Track, Mount Clear. Unsealed. Last fuel in Canberra. 4WD useful; not mandatory for every destination when dry.
- Snow/ice can close higher roads. Chains may be required — ask the Visitor Centre, do not guess from a CBD forecast.
- No ferry, no tides, no crocs. Locked gates beyond public roads and car parks.
Seasonal and storm closures change. See the official alerts snapshot above, then Parks ACT the morning you leave.
Where to stay (decision filter)
Match the bed to the trailhead. Canberra for hotels. Tharwa for last supplies. Orroral / Honeysuckle for official camping (phone 02 6237 5307 while online bookings are down). Queanbeyan if Canberra is full.
- Official park camping: Parks ACT only — never affiliated here.
- Commercial gateway beds: Stay hub (Booking.com searches may earn a commission).
- A Canberra day-trip works for Cypress Pine or Yankee Hat; Gingera wants a night in town.
- If campgrounds are full, sleep in Canberra — do not invent a Mount Clear van night on an unsealed road you have not checked.
Where to stay hub Tharwa area Orroral / Honeysuckle Gingera timing
Last town for fuel, food and medical
There is no supermarket on Gingera and no clinic at Honeysuckle. Fill fuel before the unsealed bit. Emergencies: 000. Namadgi Visitor Centre 02 6237 5307 · Access Canberra 13 22 81. No invented prices or clinic lists.
Tharwa / Visitor Centre days
Last full services: Canberra (Tuggeranong fuel, food, medical). Tharwa is a village. The Visitor Centre is card only.
Orroral / Honeysuckle / Booroomba
Fill fuel and water in Canberra. Unsealed park roads. Screenshot alerts on town Wi-Fi before you lose signal.
Gingera / Corin Road
Same last-town logic: Canberra. Mt Franklin Road can close. PLB hire at Namadgi or Tidbinbilla Visitor Centre.
Boboyan south / Mount Clear
Remote. Do not assume late fuel. Mount Clear is not a first van trip. Tell someone your plans.
Crowds & seasons
Yankee Hat, Booroomba and easy valley walks get busy on Canberra weekends and holidays. Gingera and remote Bimberi stay quieter because they are hard — quieter is not the same as safer. You can have no phone signal while a car park is full.
- Arrive early for Yankee Hat on a clear January Saturday, or accept kangaroos plus other walkers.
- A full trailhead is not a licence to block an unsealed park road.
- Remote 4WD valleys are a different pulse — and a different skill class. Emptiness is not a safety rating.
Weather, safety and communications
Alpine extremes dominate. Snow possible any month on the Brindabellas. Heat stress on steep exposed summer climbs. Weather changes in minutes — wind, fog, freeze, rain. Hypothermia, under-estimating granite descents, and a Civic forecast used as a ridge forecast are the classic failures. No crocodiles; no tidal crossings; no ferries. Tharwa is not ridge temperature.
Comms: Parks ACT: most of Namadgi and Tidbinbilla have limited or no mobile reception. 000 needs reception. Download Emergency+. Offline maps. Hire a PLB from Namadgi or Tidbinbilla Visitor Centre. We do not invent carrier coverage maps or require a brand. Canberra has bars; the valley and the range often do not. Congestion can occur in gateway towns at peak — that is not park coverage.
Self-sufficiency: tent (if overnight), warm layers, waterproofs, map + compass or reliable offline GPS, extra food, first aid. Huts are day or emergency use. Tell someone your plans / fill the register. Check Parks ACT alerts and the Visitor Centre the morning you leave. Conditions change. Live weather widget below is orientation only — not Parks ACT or BOM official advice for decisions.
Packing baseline
Brindabella weather is not Civic café temperature. A shell and insulation are the granite-day minimum — not optional “if it looks fine on the Canberra app.” Product searches live on the gear hub only — not as a merch wall here.

No general day-walk permit for marked tracks. Cotter catchment camping is restricted (lower/middle prohibited; upper by permit). Organised groups may need permits. VERIFY the Brief Guide.
Is there mobile reception?

What should I do first if I have one Namadgi overnight?
Sleep in Canberra. Book Orroral or Honeysuckle official (phone the centre if the website is down). One outdoor block the next day — Yankee Hat or Booroomba from Honeysuckle, not Gingera plus granite.
Where should I stay if Canberra hotels are full?
Queanbeyan overflow, or official park camping if you have a booking. Tharwa has few beds. Stay hub for Booking.com town cards.
