Mount Gingera
Guide updated · verify live track status with Parks ACT
Second-highest ACT peak (1,857 m). Parks ACT: snow gums, Pryors Hut, panoramic summit, last kilometre steep. Two official starts: Mt Franklin Road (14.5 km / 6 hours) or Stockyard Spur from Corin Dam (22 km / 8–9 hours, 700 m up and down).
Do not pair: Do not add Square Rock or Booroomba after Gingera. You will finish in the dark.
Turnaround: Turn around at Pryors Hut if the last kilometre is in cloud, wind or fading light. The hut is the decision point, not the cairn.
- Leaving Canberra at 10am for a 8–9 hour Stockyard Spur + Gingera day.
- Assuming Mt Franklin Road is a 2WD tourist drive in August.
- Grade 4 — hard full day
- 6 hours from Mt Franklin Road · 8–9 hours via Stockyard Spur / Corin Dam
- 14.5 km return from Mt Franklin Road · 22 km return via Stockyard Spur
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Experienced walkers who want the ACT’s second-highest summit and will treat weather as a veto
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on Parks ACT walking tracks and with Namadgi Visitor Centre before you go.

Where you start
Mt Franklin Road or Corin Dam (Stockyard Spur)
Mt Franklin Road is unsealed high-country access — 4WD often recommended; winter closure/chains possible. Stockyard Spur from Corin Dam is the sealed-road start and the harder climb (700 m in, 700 m out).
How to get there
- Confirm Mt Franklin Road status with Namadgi Visitor Centre. Snow on the Brindabellas is normal in winter.
- Stockyard Spur starts at Corin Dam on Corin Road — a long, steep climb through tall forest to snow-gum woodland on the range.
- This is not a Tharwa picnic. Budget the drive + the walk + reverse daylight.
How to do it (step by step)
- From Mt Franklin Road: 14.5 km return / 6 hours. Visit Pryors Hut. Last 1 km steep. Alpine wildflowers in summer.
- From Corin Dam: Stockyard Spur 13 km return to the Mt Franklin Road junction (6 hours) or 22 km return to Pryors Hut and Gingera (8–9 hours). Parks ACT: reasonable fitness required.
- Huts are day or emergency use — bring a tent if you ever overnight at a hut site. Most visitors are day-walkers.
What to expect
Parks ACT: a mountain walk through snow gums with panoramic views from the summit. Alpine wildflowers in summer. Visit Pryors Hut. Last kilometre steep.
Two clocks: 6 hours from Mt Franklin Road, or 8–9 hours if you earn the range on Stockyard Spur from Corin Dam. Pick one start. Write it down.
Logistics and day shape
Stockyard Spur: steep tall forest, then snow-gum woodland on the Brindabella Range, then south toward Pryors Hut and the summit. Reverse the climb on tired legs.
Mt Franklin Road start is shorter on paper and still a Grade 4 alpine day. Road access is the hidden crux in winter.
Hazards, bail-outs and reverse
Snow, ice, wind, navigation in cloud. Northern corroboree frog habitat in nearby sphagnum bogs — stay on the track; do not shortcut bogs.
Bail-out is reverse to the car. There is no chairlift. Start early or do not start.
Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not a shopping list on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · Booroomba road Plan B.

Extra tips
- Kosciuszko can be visible on a clear day. So can a white-out. Pack both ideas.
- Pryors Hut is a rest, not a booked bed.
- PLB hire from the Visitor Centre is a realistic note for this day — official Parks ACT advice for remote walking.
