Booroomba Rocks
Guide updated · verify live track status with Parks ACT
Tall forest to massive granite cliffs and Brindabella panoramas. Parks ACT lists the walk open, but Booroomba Rocks Road is closed until further notice (alert 11 May 2026). Reach the track from Honeysuckle Campground via the Australian Alps Walking Track.
Do not pair: Do not add Mount Gingera on the same day. Different trailheads, different legs, same mountain weather.
Turnaround: Out-and-back. If the granite is iced, if the wind is stripping, or if you are behind time on the Honeysuckle approach — reverse. The view is not worth a night out unplanned.
- Driving Booroomba Rocks Road because a 2024 blog still says it is open.
- Starting from the car-park distance (2.5 km) when you actually have to walk from Honeysuckle (10.5 km).
- Grade 4 — moderate experience
- 1.5 hours from the car park · 4 hours from Honeysuckle Campground
- 2.5 km return from the car park · 10.5 km return from Honeysuckle via AAWT
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Fit walkers who want Namadgi’s granite cliff views — and who will check the road first
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on Parks ACT walking tracks and with Namadgi Visitor Centre before you go.

Where you start
Honeysuckle Campground (while the road is closed)
Official short start is Booroomba Rocks car park via Booroomba Rocks Road / Apollo Road. Re-checked 13 Sep 2026: that road is still closed until further notice. Bushwalkers access the walking track from Honeysuckle Campground on the AAWT.
How to get there
- Namadgi Visitor Centre first (Naas Road, Tharwa) for the live road answer — not this page.
- Honeysuckle Campground is on the Apollo Road system south of Tharwa. Unsealed park roads are generally 2WD in dry weather; conditions change — VERIFY.
- When Booroomba Rocks Road reopens, the car park is still an unsealed approach. Low-clearance cars: caution. Do not treat “open on a blog” as live.
How to do it (step by step)
- While the road is closed: start at Honeysuckle Campground, follow the Australian Alps Walking Track to the Booroomba Rocks walking track, then climb to the cliffs. Parks ACT: 10.5 km return / 4 hours to the top from Honeysuckle; 8 km return / 2.5 hours if you only go as far as the (closed-road) car park.
- When the car park is reachable: 2.5 km return / 1.5 hours from the car park to the top. Steep sections. Stay back from the cliff edge.
- Out-and-back. Turn around at any point. Carry water. Fill the bushwalking register if provided.
What to expect
Parks ACT: walk through tall forests to views from massive granite cliffs. Some steep sections. Moderate bushwalking experience required because of distance and remoteness. Beware the cliff edge.
The short official option is 2.5 km return from Booroomba Rocks car park (1.5 hours). That only exists when the road is open. The longer official option is 10.5 km return from Honeysuckle Campground via the Australian Alps Walking Track (4 hours).
We have not walked this track for this guide. Confirm the live Parks ACT walking-tracks page and phone 02 6237 5307 the morning you go.
Logistics and day shape
Re-checked 13 Sep 2026: Booroomba Rocks Road still closed until further notice (alert from 11 May 2026). Parks ACT walking-tracks page lists the walk Status: Open via Honeysuckle Campground and the AAWT. Treat the Honeysuckle start as the default until the Visitor Centre says otherwise.
Day shape from Honeysuckle: forest, AAWT link, then the steep granite climb. Out-and-back. You can turn around at the old car-park location (8 km return / 2.5 hours official) if the extra climb is not worth it that day.
Apollo Road / unsealed park roads: generally 2WD when dry. Snow, ice and rain change that. Visitor Centre first. Card only — no cash.
Hazards, bail-outs and reverse
Granite, cliffs, heat, ice. This is not a fenced city lookout. Stay back from edges. Summer snakes and fire danger are real; winter snow on the Brindabellas is real.
Bail-out is reverse. There is no loop that drops you on a sealed highway. If you started at Honeysuckle, you finish at Honeysuckle.
Parks ACT: most of Namadgi has limited or no mobile reception. 000 needs reception. Download Emergency+. Hire a PLB from Namadgi or Tidbinbilla Visitor Centre. Tell someone your plans. We do not invent carrier coverage maps.
Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not a shopping list on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · Booroomba road Plan B.

Extra tips
- This is the park’s signature granite day — not a lookout stroll. Grade 4, some steep sections, remote enough that Parks ACT asks for moderate bushwalking experience.
- Canberra is visible north on clear days. Wind on the slabs is not the Tharwa temperature.
- Hire a PLB from Namadgi or Tidbinbilla Visitor Centre if you are stretching into the longer Honeysuckle option.

Booroomba Rocks day (Honeysuckle access)
While Booroomba Rocks Road is closed, Parks ACT sends walkers from Honeysuckle Campground via the AAWT — 10.5 km return / 4 hours to the top. Not the old 2.5 km car-park day. Cliffs. Grade 4.
