Things to do in Namadgi National Park
Last reviewed · verify live conditions with Parks ACT
Most first visits revolve around Yankee Hat or Cypress Pine Lookout from the Visitor Centre, with Square Rock as Plan B when Booroomba’s road is shut. Gingera and the AAWT are a different sport. Do not try to collect every granite day from Canberra.

Day one rule
Pick one primary experience (usually Yankee Hat or Cypress Pine). Do not collect Booroomba, Square Rock and Gingera on a Canberra same-day stack.
Weather / energy bail-out
Woodland Walk, the Visitor Centre, or Yankee Hat beat forcing Gingera in junk weather. Bail-outs are competence.
Hard walk filter
Gingera, Booroomba-from-Honeysuckle and the AAWT only when fit and planned — never as impulse add-ons after a mixed-group morning.
- 1
Yankee Hat rock art
Grade 3 · 3 hours · art-site rules
The ACT’s only publicly accessible Ngunnawal rock-art shelter — 6.5 km return / 3 hours official across grassland. Stay off the painted rock. Unsealed approach; ask at the Visitor Centre first.
- 2
Visitor Centre, Woodland Walk & Cypress Pine
First stop · lookout or summit · sealed to Tharwa
The front door at Tharwa. Maps, road status, PLB hire, card only. Woodland Walk is 1 km. Cypress Pine Lookout is 4.5 km return / 2 hours — the honest mixed-group turnaround. Mount Tennent summit is a separate Grade 4 / 6-hour day.
- 3
Booroomba Rocks
Grade 4 · check the road · cliffs
Signature granite cliffs. Parks ACT lists the walk Open; Booroomba Rocks Road is still closed on the current snapshot — walking access is from Honeysuckle via the AAWT (10.5 km / 4 hours). Stay back from edges.
- 4
Square Rock
Grade 3 · 4.5 hours · ladder
10.5 km granite and snow gums from Corin Road. Honest Plan B when Booroomba’s road is shut. Metal ladder and cliffs. Gibraltar Falls lookout nearby is closed — not a 20-minute add-on.
- 5
Heritage huts & Settlers Track
Grade 3 · 4–5 hours · remote south
Orroral Homestead in the valley; Settlers Track huts and homesteads on Boboyan Road. Parks ACT notes that southern loop was untouched by the 2020 fire. Huts: day or emergency use; Huts Code applies. Not a café crawl.

Wildlife (kangaroos) — etiquette first
Year-round · dusk caution · no feeding
Eastern greys in Orroral and Yankee Hat grassland are wild, not a sanctuary show. Distance is respect. Never feed. Slow on dusk roads. This is still Namadgi rules, not Tidbinbilla’s boardwalk.
- 7
Scenic drives (sealed then unsealed)
2WD when dry · VERIFY roads · not a resort loop
Sealed to Tharwa and along Corin Road. Beyond that, Boboyan, Old Boboyan and Brindabella approaches go unsealed — generally 2WD when dry. Snow, ice and bog rewrite the day. Ask at the Visitor Centre; do not guess from a Civic forecast.
- 8
Winter on the range (not a ski resort)
Seasonal · skills required · VERIFY closures
Snow and ice on higher roads and Gingera are real. This is not a lift-ticket day. Chains or closures possible. If the Visitor Centre is talking snow and you have no winter skills, pick Cypress Pine or stay in Canberra.

Overnight camping & the AAWT
Overnight · Grade 5 remote · VERIFY bookings
Orroral, Honeysuckle and Mount Clear — official bookings only; phone 02 6237 5307 while the website is down. The Australian Alps Walking Track is Grade 5 remote; also the current Booroomba access from Honeysuckle. Not a first Namadgi afternoon.
