  • About 40 km / 45–60 minutes from Canberra CBD via Tuggeranong and Tharwa in normal traffic — VERIFY.

Why you stop here first

Parks ACT wants you in the Visitor Centre for maps, road status, campground bookings and local knowledge. Booroomba Rocks Road is the live example: still closed until further notice on re-check 13 Sep 2026. Groups that skip Tharwa and drive the closed road have already spent the morning.

PLB hire is official here and at Tidbinbilla. Parks ACT: most of Namadgi and Tidbinbilla have limited or no mobile reception. 000 needs reception. Download Emergency+. Tell someone your plans even if you are “only going to the lookout.”

Treat this precinct as orientation, not a checklist. Buy or screenshot the map, ask about unsealed roads, then pick one outdoor block that matches daylight: Woodland Walk, Cypress Pine, or leave for Yankee Hat / Honeysuckle if the centre says the road is kind.

Namadgi Visitor Information Centre

Naas Road, Tharwa ACT 2620 — about 2.7 km south of the Murrumbidgee River Bridge at Tharwa. Official hours: 9am–4pm weekdays; 9am–4:30pm weekends and public holidays; closed Christmas Day. Card payments only.

What the centre is for: maps, Brief Guide, current track and road advice, campground bookings when the website is down, firewood for sale, PLB hire. It is not a café with a view of Gingera. Tuggeranong is still your supermarket.

If you arrive outside hours, the car park still serves Mount Tennent and the Woodland Walk. You have lost the live road briefing. Screenshot Parks ACT alerts on Canberra Wi-Fi before you leave town.

Walks that actually start here

Woodland Walk: Parks ACT Grade 2, 1 km loop, 30–45 minutes. Endangered Yellow Box–Blakely’s Red Gum grassy woodland with interpretation. Status listed Open on re-check 13 Sep 2026. This is the honest “we have grandparents and 40 minutes” product.

Cypress Pine Lookout: 4.5 km return / 2 hours from the Visitor Centre car park via the Woodland Walk then the Mt Tennent Track. Grade 4 for the full mountain; the lookout is the turnaround mixed groups should write down before they start.

Mount Tennent summit: 15 km return / 6 hours official. Fire tower views. Cycling on the fire trail only. Alternative start at the locked gate on Apollo Road (first kilometre on private property) — VERIFY. Do not add Booroomba after a Tennent summit.

Access — sealed here, unsealed beyond

Sealed to Tharwa and the Visitor Centre. Beyond that, unsealed park roads (Booroomba Rocks Road, Old Boboyan Road, Orroral Ridge Road) are generally 2WD when dry. Snow and ice on higher roads can mean chains or closure. Ask here; do not guess from a Civic forecast.

Public transport does not drop you at Honeysuckle or Yankee Hat. Canberra is the hotel hub. Tharwa has few beds. If campgrounds are full, sleep in Canberra — do not invent a Mount Clear van night on an unsealed road you have not checked.

If the bigger plan fails

Booroomba road still closed: stay here for Cypress Pine, or switch to Square Rock on the Corin door — that is a 4.5-hour granite day, not a 20-minute lookout. Yankee Hat is a different unsealed drive; only if the centre says go and you have a 3-hour walking window.

Weather junk: Woodland Walk plus the centre is still a successful first Namadgi hour. That is not failure. Stacking Gingera because the lookout felt easy is how people finish in the dark.

Book on Parks ACT where-to-stay. If that page fails, phone the Visitor Centre on 02 6237 5307 during opening hours (weekdays 9am–4pm; weekends and public holidays 9am–4:30pm). On re-check 13 Sep 2026 the where-to-stay page again offered Book online.

How long from Canberra?
