High country above Canberra

Mount Gingera is the snow-covered peak Canberra sees in winter. Parks ACT Grade 4. Two starts, two clocks. Pack alpine layers even in January. A fine Civic forecast is not a Brindabella forecast.

This is the northern Australian Alps in the ACT, adjoining Kosciuszko National Park / Bimberi. Namadgi protects sphagnum bogs that feed Canberra’s water supply. Stay on tracks. Recovery after 2003 and 2020 fire is slow in snow-gum woodland.

Sleep in Canberra the night before. First light at the trailhead. Write a reverse time at Pryors Hut. If you are not there by that time, you do not do the last kilometre.

Two starts — pick one

Mt Franklin Road: Parks ACT 14.5 km return / 6 hours. Visit Pryors Hut. Last 1 km steep. Alpine wildflowers in summer. Status Open on re-check 13 Sep 2026. The road is unsealed high-country access — 4WD often recommended; winter closure or chains possible. VERIFY with the Visitor Centre.

Stockyard Spur from Corin Dam: 13 km return to the Mt Franklin Road junction / 6 hours, or 22 km return to Pryors Hut and Gingera / 8–9 hours. 700 m up and 700 m down. Sealed to the dam; brutal on the spur. Reasonable fitness required (official).

Pick one start. Write it down. Do not “see how we feel” into Gingera after Square Rock. Square Rock is the other Corin-door granite day — still 4.5 hours.

Pryors Hut is the decision point

Parks ACT: visit Pryors Hut on the way. Last kilometre to the summit is steep. The hut is heritage and emergency shelter, not a booked bed and not a water-tap plan.

Turn around at the hut if the last kilometre is in cloud, wind or fading light. The cairn is not worth a night out unplanned. Reverse is the only bail-out. There is no chairlift.

Weather, bogs, comms

Snow, ice, wind, navigation in cloud. Hypothermia is the ordinary alpine killer, not “getting a bit cold.” Carry a shell, mid-layer, extra food, headlamp.

Sphagnum on the flanks of Gingera and nearby Ginini is habitat (including northern corroboree frog context). Stay on the track. Do not braid a new line through a bog.

Parks ACT: limited or no reception across most of Namadgi. 000 needs reception. Emergency+. PLB hire from Namadgi or Tidbinbilla Visitor Centre is a realistic note for this day. Offline maps. We do not invent carrier coverage.

If the alpine day is the wrong product

Square Rock (10.5 km / 4.5 hours from Corin Road) is the granite day that is still a working walk without the 8–9 hour Stockyard Spur clock.

If even that is too much, Cypress Pine from Tharwa is the honest half-day. Read the Plan B article: Gingera is not a Canberra afternoon.

Highlights at a glance

  • Mount Gingera 1,857 m — second-highest ACT peak (summit in the ACT)
  • Two official starts: Mt Franklin Road 14.5 km / 6 hours, or Stockyard Spur from Corin Dam 22 km / 8–9 hours
  • Pryors Hut — rest and turnaround, not a booked bed
  • Snow gums / sphagnum context (corroboree frog habitat nearby — stay on track)
  • AAWT through this range — Grade 5 remote, not a day-walk brand
  • Status listed Open on re-check 13 Sep 2026 — road access is the hidden crux in winter

  • Write a reverse clock at Pryors Hut.
  • PLB hire is official and realistic here.
  • Alpine layers in January. Headlamp in winter.
  • Do not add Square Rock or Booroomba after Gingera.

FAQ — Gingera

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can I drive to the summit?

No. Walk. Road access is to trailheads only, and Mt Franklin Road can close.

Which start should I use?

Sealed-road start = Corin Dam / Stockyard Spur (longer, steeper). Shorter on paper = Mt Franklin Road if the Visitor Centre says the road is usable. Do not mix them as a maybe.

Is it open in winter?

The walking-tracks page listed Status Open on re-check 13 Sep 2026. Winter snow, ice and road closure are the real constraint. Ask the centre. This is a skill day, not a first walk.

Can I camp at Pryors Hut?

Huts are day or emergency use. Bring a tent if you overnight at a hut site. Cotter catchment camping has extra restrictions — VERIFY the Brief Guide.

Can I do Square Rock the same day?

No. Both are full days in the Corin corridor. Pick one.
