The long south
This is where Namadgi stops feeling like a Canberra afternoon. Fuel and medical are behind you in Canberra. Reception fades. Book Mount Clear official only — phone the centre during the outage.
Parks ACT: tell someone where you are going and when you will return, especially in remote areas. If you have no local contact, you can register trip intentions with police. Carry a map. PLB hire from the Visitor Centre is a realistic note.
Yankee Hat sits on Old Boboyan Road further north in this corridor. It is a different walk (rock art, 6.5 km). Do not treat “we are already south” as a licence to do Gingera tomorrow from here — that is the Corin door.
Settlers Track
Parks ACT: 6 km loop from Boboyan Road / 4 hours, or 9 km via Waterhole Hut / 5 hours. Grade 3. Status Open on re-check 13 Sep 2026. Huts, homesteads and historic sites from the 19th and 20th centuries. Download the official Settlers Track notes (PDF).
Parks ACT: this corner of the park was untouched by the 2020 bushfire. That is unusual in Namadgi. Stay on the signed loop. Huts Code applies — day or emergency use; tent if overnighting at hut sites.
The longer loop only if daylight and legs agree at the junction. Reverse or take the short loop if you would finish after you wanted to be on Boboyan Road.
Mount Clear campground
Official: most remote campground in Namadgi, basic facilities, unsealed access, not suitable for campervans and caravans. Tents/swags preferred. Typical max 7 consecutive nights. Book official only.
Horse Gully Hut walk starts here: 16 km return / 7 hours / Grade 3 / Open. Portion of the National Trail. Download official track notes. Horse yards at Mt Clear by arrangement at the Visitor Centre.
This is not Orroral. If you want a first overnight with a trailer, Orroral is the valley product. Mount Clear is the remote product.
Unsealed roads and the border
Boboyan Road toward the NSW border. Parks ACT: generally 2WD when dry; conditions change. 4WD useful; not mandatory for every destination. Ask the Visitor Centre. Snow/ice in winter can close or require chains on higher roads.
Dogs: not in the park. Limited vehicle-transit exception on Boboyan or Brindabella Roads for ACT–NSW travel — VERIFY current policy. Do not walk a dog on Settlers Track.
If remote is the wrong product
Sleep in Canberra and walk Yankee Hat or Settlers as a long day if the campground is full or the road is ugly.
Woods Reserve is not the overflow tonight: still listed closed until late Spring on re-check 13 Sep 2026. Cotter / Blue Range are outside the park — VERIFY live, do not assume.
