Park overview

Namadgi National Park protects 106,095 hectares — almost half the ACT — at the northern end of the Australian Alps, on Ngunnawal Country. The Visitor Centre at Tharwa is the front door. This hub is how you pick a corner that matches time, weather and energy, then open a deeper area guide.

Always verify live conditions on the official Parks ACT park page and alerts. This site is independent and unofficial.

How to choose an area

First visit, mixed group, or you need today’s road answer: Tharwa and the Visitor Centre. Woodland Walk or Cypress Pine Lookout from the same car park. Mount Tennent summit is a separate Grade 4 day.

Overnight camp plus heritage, or Booroomba while the road is closed: Orroral and Honeysuckle. Book official. Phone 02 6237 5307 while the website booking banner is up.

Art site and grassland, one honest walk: Gudgenby / Yankee Hat — 6.5 km return / 3 hours official. Stay off the painted rock. Unsealed approach; ask at the centre.

Alpine day: Brindabellas / Mount Gingera — full day, layers, winter skills when the Visitor Centre is talking snow. Not a Canberra afternoon.

Remote south: Boboyan / Mount Clear / Settlers Track. Fuel in Tuggeranong first. Not a first-van night.

Sealed-road granite when Booroomba is awkward: Corin / Square Rock. Gibraltar Falls lookout is closed on the current snapshot — do not treat it as a 20-minute add-on.

Recommended order: Visitor Centre briefing → pick one outdoor block that matches daylight → screenshot Parks ACT alerts on Canberra Wi-Fi → Plan B is Yankee Hat or Cypress Pine, not a second summit.

Geography in plain English

Namadgi is Canberra’s high country — granite, snow gum and grassland at the northern end of the Australian Alps, on Ngunnawal Country. The sealed front door is Tharwa and the Visitor Centre. South and west, park roads go unsealed into Orroral, Yankee Hat, Boboyan and the Brindabellas. Corin Road is the other sealed approach, toward Square Rock (and a closed Gibraltar Falls lookout). Canberra is the hotel, fuel and medical hub. Tharwa is a village, not a resort strip.

This is a capital day-trip park for Woodland Walk, Cypress Pine or Yankee Hat if the road is kind. It is not a capital afternoon park for Gingera or Booroomba-from-Honeysuckle. Budget the unsealed kilometres and the last-town shop as part of the day, not an afterthought.

Park areas FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Canberra or Tharwa for a first overnight?

Sleep in Canberra for fuel, food and medical. Tharwa is the last village before the Visitor Centre — few beds. Official park camping is Orroral, Honeysuckle or Mount Clear (book Parks ACT only). Phone 02 6237 5307 if the Parks ACT booking page fails.

Can I visit Booroomba and Gingera on the same Canberra day?

No. Overnight first if you want a hard walk. Pick one granite or summit day. Keep Yankee Hat or Cypress Pine as Plan B. Booroomba Rocks Road is closed on the current snapshot — walking access is from Honeysuckle via the AAWT.

Where does the AAWT fit?

It is a Grade 5 remote multi-day through the Australian Alps. Namadgi is one section. It is also the current walking access to Booroomba while the road is closed. This site is not a full thru-hike plan.

Is park entry free?

Yes. Parks ACT: admission to Namadgi National Park is free. Camping is a separate paid, booked system. Do not mix the two.

Which area is the honest first visit?

Tharwa and the Visitor Centre. Maps, road status, PLB hire, Woodland Walk or Cypress Pine Lookout from the same car park. Unsealed-road days (Yankee Hat, Orroral, Boboyan) start after that briefing.
