Full day (4.5 hours walking plus Corin Road drives)

Square Rock day

Best for: Granite and snow gums on the Corin door — and the honest Plan B when Booroomba’s road is shut

Official 10.5 km return / 4.5 hours from Corin Road. Alpine ash, snow gums, metal ladder and cliffs. Gibraltar Falls lookout is closed — not your 20-minute add-on. Not Gingera.

This is the honest Plan B granite day when Booroomba Rocks Road is closed — and a first-choice full day when you are already on Corin Road. It is still a working 4.5 hours. It is not a lookout 20 minutes from the car.

Gibraltar Falls lookout nearby is Status CLOSED until further notice on the current snapshot. Woods Reserve campground on this corridor is also closed until late Spring. Do not treat either as a consolation prize.

Stockyard Spur / Mount Gingera starts at Corin Dam — another 8–9 hour day. Naming it “after Square Rock” is how people finish in the dark. Pick one granite product.

Not walked for this guide. Confirm open/closed status on Parks ACT walking tracks the morning you go.

Timeline

  1. Night before

Name Plan A and the pairing ban

Plan A = Square Rock return. Plan B = Visitor Centre + Cypress Pine if Corin weather is junk. Pairing ban: no Gingera, no Booroomba-from-Honeysuckle, no Gibraltar Falls “quick look.” Pack 2 L, shell, grip shoes, offline alerts. Sleep in Canberra.

  2. Morning

    Corin Road trailhead

Different door to Tharwa — pick one approach per day. Screenshot alerts on home Wi-Fi. Layers on. Signed Square Rock / Corin Road car park. Do not block gates. If the lot is icy or the forecast is alpine-wild, execute Plan B before you start the ladder.

  3. Walk

    Forest to granite

Steady climb through mixed eucalypt / alpine ash / snow gum. Official: 10.5 km return, 4.5 hours. Optional Orroral Valley side lookout if legs and daylight agree at the junction. Metal ladder and cliffs — care required. Reverse the same way.

  4. Lookout

    Square Rock, then reverse

Huge granite, mountain views. Stay back from edges. Eat, water, photos. The walk back is still work. Do not start a “quick” Stockyard Spur from Corin Dam because the ladder felt fine.

  5. Afternoon

    Hard turn — not Gingera

Drive Corin Road while you have daylight. Gibraltar Falls stays closed. Village or Canberra reset. If you wanted Booroomba’s cliffs, print that plan for another day after you re-check the road.

Parking & access tips

  • Signed Square Rock / Corin Road car park.
  • This is a different door to Tharwa — do not bounce between Corin and Honeysuckle in one day.
  • Gibraltar Falls lookout is closed on the current snapshot — do not detour for it.
  • Woods Reserve campground also closed — not your overflow bed.
  • Icy Corin mornings: Plan B is Tharwa, not a stubborn ladder.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Mount Gingera / Stockyard Spur the same day
  • Booroomba from Honeysuckle the same day
  • Gibraltar Falls as a 20-minute add-on (closed)
  • A Canberra afternoon start that still expects 4.5 hours plus drives

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Fit walkers who want granite when Booroomba’s road is shut
  • Groups already choosing the Corin door
  • People who will not smuggle Gingera onto the afternoon

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If ice or high wind: Tharwa Plan B, not the ladder
  • If the side lookout would finish after your reverse clock: skip it
  • If someone says “Corin Dam is right there”: that is a different 8–9 hour day
  • If Gibraltar Falls tempts you: it is closed — do not invent access

What success looks like

  • One 4.5-hour granite day completed well
  • No second summit
  • Notes for next time: Booroomba if the road reopens, or Gingera as its own printed plan

Next trip upgrade

  • Read the Booroomba road-closed Plan B article
  • Print Gingera only as a separate full day with a written reverse time
  • Print half-day Tharwa if this felt too long
