Overnight Orroral + valley morning
Best for: People who want dark skies and kangaroos without a remote 4WD camp
Guide updated · verify Parks ACT the morning you go
Book Orroral (or Honeysuckle) official only. Per person per night. Phone the Visitor Centre during the online outage. Morning: Orroral heritage or Yankee Hat — not Gingera, not Mount Clear with a camper trailer.

Park entry is free. Camping is a separate paid, booked system. Never mix the two. Typical maximum 7 consecutive nights. Snapshot: online campground bookings unavailable — phone Namadgi Visitor Centre 02 6237 5307 during hours.
Orroral is the bush-setting camp (caravans/trailers possible — official). Honeysuckle suits groups and is the current Booroomba walking access. Mount Clear is the remote third camp — tents/swags preferred, unsealed, not suitable for camper trailers. Skip Mount Clear for a first overnight.
Huts are day or emergency use; the Huts Code applies. Pryors Hut on Gingera is not a booked bed. Do not treat a hut as the camping product.
Not walked for this guide. Confirm bookings and road status with Parks ACT / the Visitor Centre before you leave Canberra. Last fuel and supermarket: Tuggeranong.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on Parks ACT before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline
Book (days before)
Official only — never affiliate
Parks ACT where-to-stay or phone 02 6237 5307. Name the camp: Orroral or Honeysuckle. Do not invent a site on a heritage paddock. If the centre is closed and the website is still down, you do not have a booking — sleep in Canberra.
Afternoon arrival
Visitor Centre then camp before dark
Card-only briefing. Firewood for sale at the centre — collection in the park is illegal. BYO water; tanks may be untreated or empty. Fuel stove preferred. Take rubbish out. Pitch on a booked site. Unsealed access: generally 2WD when dry — VERIFY.
Evening
Valley, kangaroos, dark skies
Eastern greys are wild — distance is respect, never feed. Slow on dusk roads. Limited or no mobile reception. 000 needs reception. Emergency+ downloaded. Tell someone your plans even for a booked camp. Early night — the morning walk is the point.
Morning
One valley walk
Orroral Homestead / heritage, or Yankee Hat if the road is kind (6.5 km / 3 hours — stay off the painted rock). If you booked Honeysuckle and Booroomba is your goal, that is the Booroomba-day plan — do not smuggle a 4-hour Grade 4 onto a “valley morning” with a late Canberra checkout.
Leave
Canberra, not Stockyard Spur
Pack out. Do not “warm up” on Gingera because you slept well. If you want granite cliffs, print Booroomba-day for a different date. If you want a second night, re-check the 7-night rule and the booking phone.
Packing
- Fuel stove — collection of wood in the park is illegal
- Warm sleep layer + sleeping bag rated for alpine nights
- Water containers — treat or carry
- Headlamp
- Shell + extra warm layer
- Rubbish bags — pack out
- Offline map / booking screenshot / centre phone number
- Simple first aid

Parking & access tips
- Camp in a booked site. Do not overflow onto heritage paddocks.
- Honeysuckle: do not block the Booroomba / AAWT walking access.
- Visitor Centre first for road status and firewood.
- Mount Clear is a different, more remote booking — not this plan.
- Last fuel in Canberra / Tuggeranong.
Skip if short on time / energy
- AAWT thru-hike fantasies
- Mount Clear with a camper trailer (official: not suitable)
- Gingera or Stockyard Spur as a “morning warm-up”
- Arriving after dark without a booking because the website was down
- Sleeping in a hut as if it were a booked cabin
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- First Namadgi overnight without remote 4WD skills
- Groups who will actually phone 02 6237 5307 for a booking
- People who want kangaroos and dark skies, not a summit alarm
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If you have no booking: Canberra hotel — not a paddock
- If the unsealed road is soup: cancel or delay; do not force Mount Clear
- If the morning group wants granite: that is the Booroomba-day print, another date
- If kids are done after heritage: skip Yankee Hat without guilt
What success looks like
- Booked site, packed-out rubbish, one valley walk
- No feeding wildlife
- No invented second summit
Next trip upgrade
- Print Booroomba-day from a Honeysuckle night once the group is fit
- Print Settlers Track / Boboyan only with a second overnight and a road briefing
- Read fire-recovery notes before expecting 2020 photos to match every valley

- Yankee HatParks ACT: 6.5 km return / 3 hours. Easy walking through grasslands, often with kangaroos, to Yankee Hat shelter. Do not touch the art. The site reopened after 2020 fire recovery — still treat it as fragile.
- Booroomba RocksTall forest to massive granite cliffs and Brindabella panoramas. Parks ACT lists the walk open, but Booroomba Rocks Road is closed until further notice (alert 11 May 2026). Reach the track from Honeysuckle Campground via the Australian Alps Walking Track.
