Long full day (6 or 8–9 hours walking)

Mount Gingera full day

Best for: Experienced walkers with an alpine kit and a written reverse time

Pick one start: Mt Franklin Road 14.5 km / 6 hours, or Stockyard Spur from Corin Dam 22 km / 8–9 hours. Pryors Hut is the turnaround meeting point, not a booked bed. Not a Canberra afternoon.

Second-highest ACT peak (1,857 m). Snow gums, Pryors Hut, panoramic summit, last kilometre steep. This is an alpine day in any month. A Canberra afternoon is the wrong product. Sleep in Canberra the night before. First light at the trailhead.

Pick one start and write it down. Mt Franklin Road is the shorter official option (confirm winter access — snow, ice, chains or closure). Stockyard Spur from Corin Dam is the long, steep 700 m up-and-down. Mixing starts because a car shuffle “might work” is how groups finish in the dark.

Pryors Hut: day or emergency use, Huts Code, tent still required if you intended to overnight (Cotter catchment rules apply). It is not a camping product and not a weather-proof hotel. Turn around there if the written reverse time has fired.

Not walked for this guide. Parks ACT: limited or no mobile reception. 000 needs reception. PLB hire at Namadgi or Tidbinbilla Visitor Centre is a realistic planning note. Confirm Mt Franklin Road with the centre in winter.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Write the reverse clock

Name the start: Corin Dam or Mt Franklin Road — not a maybe. Write: if we are not at Pryors Hut by [time], we do not do the last kilometre. Pack alpine layers even in January, 2 L+, headlamp, extra food, PLB or satellite messenger if you have one. Screenshot alerts on home Wi-Fi. Sleep early.

  2. Dawn

    One trailhead only

Fuel in Tuggeranong. Do not stop for a long Civic brunch. Alpine layers in the pack. If the Visitor Centre (when open) is talking snow and you have no winter skills, cancel — print Square Rock or half-day Tharwa. Do not “see how the ridge looks.”

  3. Walk in

    Snow gum, then hut

Mt Franklin Road: 14.5 km / 6 hours official. Stockyard Spur: 22 km / 8–9 hours, steep tall forest then snow-gum woodland. Fill the register. Eat on the clock. The last kilometre to the summit is steep — only if the hut time and weather still agree.

  4. Summit or hut

    Weather veto

Cloud, wind, snow, or a late hut arrival: hut is enough. Reverse. Ego is not a navigation tool. Stay together. The reverse is still a mountain.

  5. Reverse

    Headlamp margin

Stockyard Spur descent is long and steep on tired legs. Headlamp before you need it. Do not add Square Rock because Corin Dam is “right there.” Drive out with daylight if you can; if you cannot, you started too late — write that down for next time.

Parking & access tips

  • Corin Dam or Mt Franklin Road trailhead — do not block gates.
  • One start only. No clever car shuffle unless it is already booked in the plan.
  • Winter: ask the Visitor Centre about chains and closures before you drive.
  • Square Rock car park is a different day — not overflow parking for Gingera.
  • Screenshot alerts before you lose bars.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Square Rock the same day
  • Any second summit
  • A Canberra afternoon start
  • Winter without skills because “it’s only the ACT”
  • Treating Pryors Hut as a booked overnight

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Experienced walkers with alpine kit
  • Groups who will write a reverse time and obey it
  • People who slept in Canberra and will start at first light

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If the Visitor Centre is talking snow and you have no winter skills: cancel
  • If you are late to Pryors Hut: no last kilometre
  • If weather on the ridge is junk: hut is enough
  • If someone wants Square Rock after: that is a different printed plan

What success looks like

  • Whole group at the cars with a headlamp still in reserve
  • Summit or honest hut turnaround — both count
  • No second granite day stacked on tired legs

Next trip upgrade

  • Read “Gingera is not a Canberra afternoon”
  • Print Square Rock if you want granite without the summit
  • Hire a PLB at Namadgi or Tidbinbilla before the next remote day
