Booroomba Rocks day (Honeysuckle access)

Best for: Fit walkers after the Visitor Centre confirms the current access

While Booroomba Rocks Road is closed, Parks ACT sends walkers from Honeysuckle Campground via the AAWT — 10.5 km return / 4 hours to the top. Not the old 2.5 km car-park day. Cliffs. Grade 4.

This is the signature granite day — rewritten by a road closure. Re-checked 13 Sep 2026: Booroomba Rocks Road still closed until further notice (alert from 11 May 2026). The walk is listed Open from Honeysuckle via the Australian Alps Walking Track.

Do not skip the Visitor Centre on a closed-road day. Unsealed approaches to Honeysuckle are generally 2WD when dry. Snow, ice and bog rewrite the day. If the centre says no, print Square Rock instead — that is a 4.5-hour granite day from Corin Road, not a 20-minute lookout.

When the car park is reachable again, the short start returns (2.5 km return / 1.5 hours) — still Grade 4, still cliffs. This timeline assumes the current Honeysuckle access. Check Parks ACT walking tracks the morning you go.

Not walked for this guide. Stay back from edges. Do not stack Square Rock or Gingera onto this day.

Timeline

  1. Night before

Confirm access and name Plan B

Parks ACT Booroomba alert + walking-tracks page. Phone 02 6237 5307 if unsure. Plan A = Honeysuckle → AAWT → Booroomba cliffs. Plan B = Square Rock on Corin Road if the Honeysuckle approach is junk. Pack 2 L+, shell, grip shoes, offline map. Sleep in Canberra — not a Civic café add-on at 10am.

  2. Early

    Visitor Centre then Honeysuckle

Fuel in Tuggeranong. Briefing at Tharwa. Then the unsealed run to Honeysuckle Campground. Do not treat “open on a blog” as live. If the road is soup, execute Plan B before you are committed to a boggy reverse.

  3. Walk out

    AAWT link then granite

Parks ACT: 10.5 km return / 4 hours to the top from Honeysuckle; 8 km return / 2.5 hours if you only go as far as the (closed-road) car park. Out-and-back. Fill the register. Steep sections. Turn around at the old car park if the extra climb is not worth it.

  4. Cliffs

    Views, then reverse

Massive granite, Brindabella panoramas. Stay back from the edge. This is not a fenced city lookout. Photos, water, then the same track home. No loop exit onto a highway.

  5. Afternoon

    Honeysuckle then Canberra

Heat, ice, tired legs. Do not invent Square Rock from Corin because the cliffs felt easy. Drive out with daylight on the unsealed road. Debrief: if this felt too long, next time wait for the car-park start or print the half-day Tharwa plan.

Parking & access tips

  • Honeysuckle Campground trailhead parking — do not block camp sites.
  • Visitor Centre first on a closed-road day.
  • Unsealed: generally 2WD when dry — VERIFY.
  • Do not wait for Booroomba Rocks Road to reopen on a rumour.
  • Have Square Rock named as Plan B before you leave Tharwa.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Square Rock the same day
  • Mount Gingera
  • Mount Tennent summit after the cliffs
  • Starting after a long Canberra brunch
  • The old 2.5 km car-park assumption while the road is closed

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Fit walkers who will check the road first
  • Groups who accept a 4-hour Grade 4 from Honeysuckle, not a lookout stroll
  • People who already have Square Rock as a named Plan B

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If the road is still closed and Honeysuckle access is junk: Square Rock, not illegal access
  • If anyone is done at the old car park: that 8 km return still counts
  • If ice or high wind on the granite: reverse early
  • If someone wants Gingera “after”: that is tomorrow or never

What success looks like

  • Whole group back to Honeysuckle with daylight for the unsealed reverse
  • One granite experience completed well — not two
  • Honest notes: wait for the car park, or print Square Rock next time

Next trip upgrade

  • Read the Booroomba road-closed Plan B article
  • Print Square Rock if you want sealed-road granite
  • Print Orroral overnight if you want Honeysuckle as a booked camp
