Honeysuckle Creek and the Apollo-era dish
Honeysuckle Campground sits near the former NASA tracking station that relayed Apollo 11. What visitors can still use — camp, walks, interpretation — without treating it as a working station.

Best for: Overnight campers and Booroomba walkers using Honeysuckle

Parks ACT: space tracking stations commissioned by NASA and operated locally were part of the Apollo program. Honeysuckle Creek’s dish beamed live images on the day of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The station is gone; the campground and interpretation remain.
Visitors mix three places: Honeysuckle Campground in Namadgi, the former station site interpretation, and Tidbinbilla Deep Space Communication Complex — a different site, different booking, often a Canberra tour product. Do not treat a GYG wildlife loop as a Namadgi campground tour.
While Booroomba Rocks Road is closed, Honeysuckle is also the walking access to Booroomba via the AAWT. Camping is official only. Phone 02 6237 5307 if the Parks ACT booking page fails.
Do not mix the dishes

Canberra tours that stop at Tidbinbilla tracking facilities are not a Namadgi campground tour. If you want Apollo context inside Namadgi, it is Honeysuckle interpretation plus a walk — not a GYG kangaroo loop at Tidbinbilla.
This site’s tours hub is honest about that: featured GetYourGuide products are Canberra / Tidbinbilla wildlife trips. They are not Booroomba day-walks. Park fees and official camping are never affiliated.
Camping here
Book Orroral or Honeysuckle on Parks ACT where-to-stay or by phone. Free park entry is not a free campsite. Typical 7-night maximum. BYO water or treat tanks. Fuel stove preferred. Pack rubbish out. Do not block walking access to the AAWT / Booroomba link.
Orroral is the other valley camp (caravans/trailers possible — official). Mount Clear is remote-basic, not suitable for camper trailers. Skip Mount Clear for a first overnight.
Walks from this door
Booroomba from Honeysuckle: 10.5 km / 4 hours Grade 4 while the road is closed. Print that itinerary separately. Do not smuggle it onto a “heritage morning” with a late checkout.
Orroral Homestead / heritage walks in the valley. Yankee Hat is a different unsealed road. Ask at the Visitor Centre. Fill registers.
What never to do
Do not treat closed station remnants as a playground. Do not fly drones over campers or cultural sites. Do not arrive after dark without a booking because the website was down — sleep in Canberra.
Do not tell kids the dish is “still here.” The story is interpretation plus a landscape. That is enough.
Pair with a plan
Print Overnight Orroral + valley morning if camping is the point. Print Booroomba-day if granite is the point from a Honeysuckle night. Print the fire-recovery article if pre-2020 photos are your mental map.
Always verify bookings and alerts. This is not a NASA visitor-centre ticket page.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I visit the old dish?
The operational station is gone. Use official interpretation at Honeysuckle and Parks ACT material. Do not wander into closed infrastructure.
Is this the same as Tidbinbilla tracking?
No. Tidbinbilla Deep Space Communication Complex is a different site. Canberra tours that stop there are not Namadgi camping.
Can I camper-trailer at Honeysuckle?
Parks ACT notes some campervan/trailer space at Honeysuckle. Mount Clear is not suitable. VERIFY current site rules when you book.
Can I sleep in a hut instead?
Huts are day or emergency use. Book a campground. Pryors Hut on Gingera is not this valley and not a cabin.
