The signature walk is not the same as the signature car park. Parks ACT: Booroomba Rocks Road is closed due to adverse weather until further notice (alert dated 11 May 2026). The walking track is listed Open — access from Honeysuckle Campground via the Australian Alps Walking Track.

Old posts still sell a 2.5 km return / 1.5 hour car-park day. That product does not exist while the road is closed. The live product is 10.5 km return / 4 hours to the top from Honeysuckle, Grade 4, cliffs. If that clock is too long, Square Rock is the other granite day — not a 20-minute lookout.

This is planning from official pages — not walked, not a live closure feed. Re-check the alerts list and walking-tracks page the morning you go. Phone Namadgi Visitor Centre 02 6237 5307 if the internet and the road disagree.

What Parks ACT actually said

Alert dated 11 May 2026 until further notice: Booroomba Rocks Road closed. Re-checked 13 Sep 2026: still closed. Alternative access is published on the walking-tracks page: start at Honeysuckle Campground, use the AAWT, then the Booroomba walking track. The walk itself is listed Open.

Phone Namadgi Visitor Centre 02 6237 5307. Do not treat a third-party map pin, a 2019 blog, or a friend’s “it was fine in April” as reopen news. Unsealed approaches to Honeysuckle are generally 2WD when dry — snow, ice and bog rewrite that. Ask at Tharwa before you commit.

When the car park is reachable again, the short start returns. It is still Grade 4 and still cliffs. This article assumes the current Honeysuckle access until Parks ACT says otherwise.

How the Honeysuckle day actually works

Sleep in Canberra. Fuel in Tuggeranong. Briefing at the Visitor Centre, then the unsealed run to Honeysuckle. Fill the bushwalking register. Out-and-back. Stay back from edges. Reverse the same way — there is no loop exit onto a highway.

Parks ACT figures: 10.5 km return / 4 hours to the top from Honeysuckle; 8 km return / 2.5 hours if you only go as far as the closed-road car park. Write the car-park turnaround as a legitimate success before you start, so nobody has to invent a “we came this far” argument on granite.

Print the Booroomba-day itinerary on this site if you want a timed skeleton. Do not stack Square Rock or Gingera onto the afternoon because the cliffs felt easy.

If 4 hours from Honeysuckle is too much

Square Rock is 10.5 km / 4.5 hours from Corin Road — still a full day, but a different door, and the usual Canberra–Corin approach is sealed. Metal ladder and cliffs. Gibraltar Falls lookout nearby is closed on the current snapshot — not your consolation prize.

Yankee Hat is the grassland Plan B if granite is not the point of the day: 6.5 km return / 3 hours official, art-site rules, unsealed Old Boboyan Road. Ask at the centre. Stay off the painted rock.

Cypress Pine Lookout from the Visitor Centre car park is the mixed-group bail-out: 4.5 km return / 2 hours. Woodland Walk is 1 km. Those still count as a Namadgi day. Ego is not a road-reopening tool.

What never to do

Do not drive around the closed-road signs. Do not invent parking on vegetation at Honeysuckle. Do not treat the AAWT link as a casual “extra kilometre” without water, a reverse clock and a shell.

Do not add Gingera because Corin Dam is “on the way home.” That is an 8–9 hour second product. Do not treat Pryors Hut or any valley hut as a booked bed if the day overruns.

Before you leave Canberra

Screenshot Parks ACT alerts and the walking-tracks page on home Wi-Fi. Agree Plan A (Honeysuckle) and Plan B (Square Rock or Tharwa) out loud. Pack 2 L+, grip shoes, shell, offline map. Card only at the Visitor Centre.

If the centre says the Honeysuckle approach is junk, execute Plan B before you are committed to a boggy reverse. A calm Square Rock day still counts. A heroic illegal access does not.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Is the walk closed too?

Re-checked 13 Sep 2026: Parks ACT lists the walking track Open, with Honeysuckle as the access while the road stays closed. Always verify live. Open on a page is not a weather forecast.

Can I still do the old 2.5 km car-park walk?

Not while the road is closed. That start does not exist until Parks ACT reopens Booroomba Rocks Road. Plan 10.5 km / 4 hours from Honeysuckle, or print Square Rock.

Is Square Rock easier?

It is a different door, not a shorter toy. Official 10.5 km / 4.5 hours, ladder and cliffs. It is the honest Plan B granite day, not a 20-minute lookout.

Can I camp at Honeysuckle to shorten the morning?

Yes if you hold an official booking (per person per night). Phone 02 6237 5307 if the Parks ACT booking page fails. Camping is a separate fee from free park entry. Do not overflow onto heritage paddocks.
